</p><p>Chierchia studierte Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Rom La Sapienza (Laurea-Abschluss 1981) und wurde 1985 am <a href="Courant_Institute" class="mw-redirect" title="Courant Institute">Courant Institute</a> der New York University bei <a href="Henry_P._McKean" class="mw-redirect" title="Henry P. McKean">Henry P. McKean</a> promoviert (Quasi-Periodic Schrodinger Operators in One Dimension, Absolutely Continuous Spectra, Bloch Waves and integrable Hamiltonian Systems).<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Als <a href="Post-Doktorand" class="mw-redirect" title="Post-Doktorand">Post-Doktorand</a> war er an der <a href="University_of_Arizona" title="University of Arizona">University of Arizona</a>, der <a href="ETH_Z%C3%BCrich" title="ETH Zürich">ETH Zürich</a> und der <a href="%C3%89cole_polytechnique" title="École polytechnique">École polytechnique</a> in Paris. Seit 2002 ist er Professor für mathematische Analysis an der <a href="Universit%C3%A4t_Rom_III" title="Universität Rom III">Universität Rom III</a>.

</p><p>Mit Fabio Pusateri und seiner Doktorandin <a href="Gabriella_Pinzari" title="Gabriella Pinzari">Gabriella Pinzari</a> gelang ihm die Erweiterung des <a href="Kolmogorow-Arnold-Moser-Theorem" title="Kolmogorow-Arnold-Moser-Theorem">KAM-Theorems</a> vom Dreikörperproblem auf das n-Körperproblem.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er befasste sich auch mit weiteren Aspekten der KAM-Theorie (invariante Tori im Phasenraum Hamiltonscher Systeme und Stabilitätsfragen) und Arnold Diffusion, Spektraltheorie der quasiperiodischen eindimensionalen Schrödingergleichung und Analoga der KAM-Theorie bei unendlich dimensionalen Hamiltonschen Systemen und partiellen Differentialgleichungen (fastperiodische nichtlineare Wellengleichungen).

</p><p>2014 war er eingeladener Sprecher auf dem <a href="Internationaler_Mathematikerkongress" title="Internationaler Mathematikerkongress">Internationalen Mathematikerkongress</a> in <a href="Seoul" title="Seoul">Seoul</a> (mit Gabriella Pinzari: Metric stability in the planetary n-body problem).
